San Marcos la Laguna

DARK DOCKS

Upon arrival at the Panajachel ferry dock we contacted the hotel were our room was booked, much as we had kept them informed of major delays along the way. The communication was through email and “WhatsApp”, the recommended and preferred way the property stated in the email throughout the booking process. Being well traveled, it is a common courtesy to update the lodging facility when delays impact the expected arrival time. Understandably.

We confirmed with the boat captain prior to departure that the cost from Panajachel to San Marcos was Q$250 and boarded the vessel. The approximate fifteen minute ferry ride to San Marcos la Laguna from Panajachel in the dark of the night following nearly nineteen hours of shuttle travel was a welcome relief knowing a reservation had been made, and confirmed multiple times throughout our travels. The lake happened to be calm that Monday night and we experienced a smooth ride. The steep mountain outlines surrounding Lake Atitlán were by all means impressive. I would have no idea how impressive those were until the following morning.

The boat reached the dock shortly before ten o’clock at night.

The following day was well worth the late arrival. We enjoyed the moments at Lush Atitlán overlooking the lake from the terrace. At the end of the week Daniel held a private gathering where my friend, Ellie from Saudi Emirates, was bartender while enjoying the music. Without much detail, some of the videos are below. Ellie certainly was spectacularly limber, energetic and full of life. Ellie certainly was the highlight of the evening.
